Un belle nuit avec le Trews…..
The TrewsWritten by: Tracy Rafuse

Well my time with an open heart, a piece of paper and a rock band has been few and far between. My life has taken some unexpected turns and after the tragic loss of a man with whom was a father figure to me, I kind of sheltered myself to anything that would open my heart to warmness.

Since that time I have seen some musical acts but it never left me with the eagerness of telling the story. Until now, the Christmas miracle of all miracles occurred and I finally felt that skip in my step again.

The first time I had the opportunity to see The Trews, up close and personal, was in 2005, in the venue which once bore the name, The Marquee, a dirty little venue located in the rougher part of Halifax. They were there with a band, Will Hoge, from the States, and the two provided an experience like no other. I had seen the band at the ECMA’s in Sydney, Cape Breton, earlier that year, from a nose bleed seat, and seen them do an amazing rendition of ,”If You Leave,” with Gordie Johnson, and was in amazement of the guitar skills of John-Angus, watching him climb on the speakers, and playing as if it was his final show.

This passion for The Trews involved a random birthday escape to Montreal with a girlfriend, I mean Montreal is an experience in itself, but to be an East Coaster watching an amazing East Coast band in a Montreal bar is unique and unforgettable to say the least. Some may have called this “fanatic,” I on the other hand see it as an eye opening experience. I like to witness groups in many facets, so I can see if their attitude is about the music or solely about on how big they can become. The Trews proved that their passion was to perform and ensure that everyone involved had the best time of their lives. Many free drinks later and the opportunity to stand side-stage at a small venue, and view The Trews, in what I seen as the beginning of something huge.

Fast forward almost five years, and I am having placed in my hand, VIP passes and tickets to a show that has been sold out for months, an evening with The Trews in a local Halifax bar, The Seahorse, rustic and small in comparison to most of the DJ bars of the city. Superb for a band to get intimate with its fans and amazing for the fan to become one with the band. Here I was in this historic location, with 19 other people that had the opportunity to listen in on a sound check with the band, and ask any question you had for the band. How cool is it, which in reality it was like a kitchen party with The Trews, with out the mess of cleaning up after everyone left.

I took my seat on a wooden bench, directly in front of the stage, and anticipated the excitement, as I seen Colin, John-Angus, Jack and Sean enter the stage casually, picking up their instruments, and giving gentle nods to random people in the audience. I felt like I was there, and then in the next breath, I was wishing someone would pinch me. Sitting there listening to the words, the vocals, the rawness in the verses, and the stories linked to each song allowed me to appreciate this band all the more. I had never felt this good in my heart in so long... truthfully during the sound check, sitting right of Colin, was this cute little boy, not sure what relation he had to the band, but he stole the show, with his shaker in one hand, his constant watch of Colin and John-Angus’ cues and his ability to follow along with the words, made the band more beautiful then I could ever imagine. Following the few songs and questions, the band mingled with the small amazed crowd of twenty, and took in conversations from each person who provided unique and creative words to each band member, in their own private interview. Everyone wanted a moment to have the opportunity to speak or hear the words of these four talented guys, and they provided that without haste. I recanted my one regret of The Trews show at The Marquee, 5 years before, I passed John-Angus, and in amazement of him, I didn’t want to disturb him, as he listened on to the other band playing, but tonight I had the opportunity to shake the hands of all four talented men, and allow them to hear my small but meaningful words of their performance, and pass along my wish for much success. How thrilling to allow the thoughts that rest in your heart, come forth and be told to the person that so deserve them. My heart was opened and I couldn’t wait for the show later on that evening.
